Gigabyte: When your computer takes a really big bite out of memory.
Computers have spent decades getting more powerful, which means we’ve spent decades finding new ways to fill them up.
A gigabyte sounds enormous until you start adding photos, videos, apps, updates, downloads, backups, and whatever mysterious collection of files your computer insists falls under “System Data.”
Then suddenly a billion bytes doesn’t seem quite so impressive.
Technically, a gigabyte is a unit of digital information. According to Chad, it’s what happens when your computer develops an appetite and discovers that memory is on the menu.
The problem continues in Memory Full, when your device finally admits there’s no room left for anything else. And Data Mining shows what happens when computers stop eating the numbers and start interrogating them.
Technology keeps giving us more storage. We keep responding by finding larger things to put in it.
So perhaps the real definition of a gigabyte isn’t about bytes at all.
It’s an appetizer.
